SUMMARY

The main objective of this chapter has been to review widely read and cited theories of separation/divorce violence against women. What most of the perspectives examined in this chapter have in common is an emphasis on two variables: male proprietariness, and male peer support. Additionally, it should be obvious that all the theories take gender seriously. This is because they were crafted by feminist scholars. To be sure, feminists are at the forefront of empirical and theoretical work on separation/divorce woman abuse.

What is sorely needed, however, are tests of existing theories using data derived from men (DeKeseredy and Rennison 2013b). This has been an ongoing issue in the area of separation/divorce assault research. The academic community studying violence against women is now at the point where it can confidently state that a substantial number of females experience abuse during and after separation/divorce, and hence it is time to use some different techniques to yield better answers to the very important question “Why does he do that?” (Bancroft 2002). This is not to say, though, that interviewing women or administering victimization surveys do not help achieve this goal. They certainly do, and the information women provide led to the development of the theories reviewed in this chapter.

Nevertheless, interviews with men are in short supply and so are self-report surveys administered to men. Arendell (1995) is one of a tiny cohort of scholars to glean interview data from men about separation/divorce assault, and what she stated in the 1990s still has some validity today:
